The Division of International Studies helps ensure that UW–Madison students, whatever their majors, graduate with the skills, attitudes, and knowledge they need to be global citizens.
International Academic Programs (IAP)• Housed in the Division, IAP is the largest and central study abroad office on campus. • Nearly 80% of all UW–Madison students who studied abroad in 2007-08 went through IAP. • IAP offers international opportunities to students in majors from engineering to English.
International Studies Major (IS)• The IS major is joint venture of the Division and the College of Letters & Science (L & S). • With more than 500 students, it is one of the largest majors on campus. • The IS major offers specialization in: Global Security; International Political Economy & Policy; Culture in an Age of Globalization; and Global Commons / Global Environment.
International Learning Community (ILC)• The Division supports the ILC with the Division of University Housing, the College of L & S, and the departments of African Languages and Literature, East Asian Languages andLiterature, French and Italian, German, Scandinavian Studies, and Spanish and Portuguese. • It provides language-specific housing in six languages, including German, Japanese, and Arabic. • The ILC is home to 160 students, including 30 international students. |
The Division of International Studies supports research, education, and partnerships that harness our growing understanding of the world to the benefit of communities both locally and globally.
International Institute• The Institute was founded in 1996 as a joint venture of the Division and the College of L & S. • It is home to centers of research and teaching that together cover nearly every region of the globe. • The Institute houses a record number of federally funded National Resource Centers. • Institute centers serve as a resource to programs in global health, business, and more.
Emerging Powers Initiative (EPI) • EPI is an initiative of Division in conjunction with the International Institute area studies centers, the Wisconsin Alumni Association, and the Wisconsin School of Business. • Regional initiatives within EPI connect UW–Madison’s faculty, alumni, and international partners to address the growing influence of countries such as Brazil, India, and China. • EPI maintains and develops partnerships that benefit industry and education both locally and abroad.
Research Support • The Division grants Graduate Field Research Awards each year to support pre-dissertation research abroad. • The Division sponsors research circles with the International Institute and Global Studies that bring together faculty, graduate students, and staff from across campus to address issues with international relevance. • The Division helped launch the Human Rights Initiative in 2007 to engage faculty through collaboration and scholarship in interdisciplinary work on human rights.

• World Languages UW–Madison offers instruction in 59 modern languages, 26 ancient/classical languages, and intensive summer language workshops in lesscommonly taught languages through the College of Letters & Science.
• Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) honors program provides students with scholarship, mentoring, and networking opportunities
• Some 4,000 international students enroll at UW–Madison each year.
• The Distinguished International Visitors programs includes a Diplomat-in-Residence each year.• Visit the Division’s Badgers Abroad Blog to meet students, faculty, and alumni who live abroad.
• The Division partners with L & S to support the Language Institute which fosters language teaching learning on campus and in secondary schools.
• Here on Earth: Radio without Borders, reaches more than 400,000 listeners each day. The program is produced through a partnership between Wisconsin Public Radio and the Division of International Studies.
• The Division produces Wisconsin Worldview, a magazine for alumni living abroad, with the Wisconsin Alumni Association.
• The Center for Global Health was founded in 2005 by the Division and four campus health science units. It offers an interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Public Health to students and professionals.
The Division of International Studies coordinates a number of special initiatives that support teaching, research, and outreach about critical global issues and emerging economies.
• Human Rights Initiative engages scholars from all disciplines in collaborative scholarship and events, including two annual human rights lecture series.
• China Initiative and India Initiative help scholars, alumni, and Wisconsin businesses establish international partnerships in industry and education.
• The Division of International Studies is UW’s managing unit for its membership in the Worldwide Universities Network, an international alliance of leading higher-education institutions.
• International Academic Programs (IAP) serves as the primary study-abroad office on campus. Last year, 1,800 UW–Madison students study abroad each year. UW–Madison offers more than 230 study-abroad programs in 51 countries on every continent but Antarctica.
• The International Academic Internship program (IAI), a partnership of the Division of International Studies, the School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the Institute for Cross-College Biology Education, places dozens of student interns in companies and organizations across the world each year.
• Closer to home, the Washington D.C. Semester in International Affairs allows advanced undergraduates to combine course work with an internationally focused internship in the nation’s capital.
The International Institute is a joint venture of the Division of International Studies and the College of Letters & Science. Eight of these area and international studies programs are federally funded National Resource Centers, a record number nationwide:
